The Power of Purpose

March is Women’s History Month!

Throughout the history of The Salvation Army, women leaders have profoundly shaped its mission and spirit, offering wisdom that resonates deeply within and beyond the Army. Their words reflect a commitment to living out the fullness of God’s call, embracing salvation in its entirety, and dedicating themselves to serving humanity with love, discipline, and purpose.

Eva Burrows

When asked what she wanted on her tombstone, General Eva Burrows quickly replied, “She pleased God.” This was her deepest desire: to live a life that was pleasing to God. She valued the personal connections she made and the impact she had on people’s lives, whether through a word spoken or a simple act of love. Her role was not about being an important leader, but about touching lives in meaningful ways. She found joy in working closely with people, particularly at the Melbourne Project 614, where she was simply someone who helped and loved others.

Linda Bond

General Linda Bond often spoke about the significance of The Salvation Army’s name, Salvation. To her, salvation means more than deliverance from sin — it is a call to holy living and holistic service to humanity. The Salvation Army’s mission to serve suffering people in Christ’s name is both humbling and empowering. She also celebrates the spontaneous nature of Salvation Army worship, particularly the Mercy Seat, where believers can respond to God’s word and make a commitment in front of the community of faith. She views this as a beautiful, tangible expression of grace and support, where the congregation prays for one another’s journeys.

Evangeline Booth

General Evangeline Booth emphasized that our ambition in life should be to align our every action with God’s will, constantly seeking to fulfill His purposes, even amid struggles and temptations. She believed that life’s true measure was not how long we lived, but how well we lived — serving God and humanity with purpose and dedication. General Evangeline urged believers to find their calling and live it to the fullest, recognizing that the impact of our lives on others holds eternal significance.
